INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: India, Kenya, Pakistan, Sri Lanka.

Note: Børgesen (1932b: 120) applied the name Halymenia porphyroides to an alga from India and Pakistan that he erroneously associated with Kallymenia harveyana J. Agardh (1844: 40; type locality: Cape of Good Hope, South Africa) (Pugetia harveyana (J. Agardh) R. Norris, 1964: 119), a species not reported from the Indian Ocean. Because of the prior existence of Halymenia harveyana J. Agardh (H. floresia subsp. harveyana (J. Agardh) Womersley & J. Lewis), Børgesen was obligated to change the epithet. M. Balakrishnan (1961c: 184–191, figs. 1–10, pl. VI: fig. 3) ignored the fact that H. porphyroides had been proposed as a new name for an existing species and treated it as the name of a new species with Okha as the type locality. Parkinson (l.c.) corrected the situation by proposing a new species to accommodate Børgesen's material.
