INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Aldabra Islands, Andaman Islands, Australia, India, Indonesia (Java), Malaysia, Mauritius, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka.

Note: The synonymy was proposed by J. Norris & Fredericq (1990) and Fredericq & J. Norris (1992). After examining a collection from Nusa-Kembangan, south coast of Java (the basis of Weber-van Bosse's records of Gracilaria blodgettii), Abbott (1988b: 155) concluded that the Javanese material differs from this species. She did not say, however, to which species she would refer it.

Specimens from non–Indian Ocean localities in Indonesia recorded as Gracilaria cylindrica by Weber-van Bosse (1928: 432) were described as a new species, Polycavernosa vanbosseae, by Abbott (1988b: 152, figs. 1, 2; type locality: Pulau "Jedan'' [Jin], southeast coast of Aru Islands, Indonesia), who, however, did not mention Indian Ocean records of the Børgesen species. Polycavernosa vanbosseae was transferred to Gracilaria by Abbott (in Abbott, Zhang, & B. Xia, 1991: 23).
