IOC entry for Porphyra purpurea

Previous entry: Porphyra okhaensis

Porphyra purpurea (Roth) C. Agardh

Ulva purpurea Roth, 1797: 209, pl. VI: fig. 1 (type locality: near Eckwarden, Niedersachsen, Germany).

Porphyra purpurea (Roth) C. Agardh, 1824: 191.

Porphyra vulgaris C. Agardh, 1829: no. XXVIII, pl. 28, nom. illeg.—Harvey, 1857a: no. 82.— Sonder, 1880: 39.— J. Murray, 1881: 2.— G. Murray, 1887: 26.

Misapplied name:

Porphyra umbilicalis.—Chopra, Nayar, & Chopra, 1956: 202.

INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka.

Note: Porphyra vulgaris is a superfluous name for P. purpurea. The record for Pakistan originated with J. Murray (1881) and was repeated by Chopra, Nayar, & Chopra (1956, as P. umbilicalis). It has been seriously doubted by S. Dixit (1940b: 27–28). The record for Sri Lanka originated with Harvey (1857a) and was repeated by G. Murray (1887), but the only species recognized from there by Durairatnam (1961a) is P. suborbiculata. The record from Australia (Sonder, 1880) is equally doubtful.
