Note: Drouet (1978: 134) indicated as type of this species a specimen in L that cannot serve as lectotype for two reasons: it is not from the type locality; and it was collected after the publication of the species. Elsewhere in the same work (p. 146), Drouet cited a specimen from Wangerooge (in L) as the type of this species, which he referred to Anabaina licheniformis Bory de Saint-Vincent.
