Note: In members of this family, several to many nonmotile trichomes are enclosed in a conspicuous sheath with a conical apex. As circumscribed by Anagnostidis & Komárek (1988: 396–397), it includes the single genus Schizothrix.
Note: Hypheothrix Kützing (1843b: 229) is a superfluous name inasmuch as the genus to which it was applied included Sclerothrix callitrichae Kützing, the type of Sclerothrix Kützing (1833b: no. 7). Hypheothrix was treated as a subgenus of Schizothrix by Gomont (1890: 352), but subsequent authors (Kirchner, 1898; Forti, 1907) have restored its generic rank. It was not mentioned by Anagnostidis & Komárek (1988: 396–397) in their treatment of the Schizotrichaceae. The following species remains in limbo.
Hypheothrix tenax G. Martens, 1871a: 172 (type locality: India).—Prain, 1905: 333.
Misapplied names:
Hypheothrix tenax Wolle.—Biswas, 1926: 23–24.
Schizothrix tenax.—Desikachary, 1959: 334.
INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: India.
Note: Drouet (1968: 90, 99), after examining the holotype of this species (in BM), assigned it to Schizothrix mexicana Gomont. Biswas (l.c.) and Desikachary (l.c.) apparently confused Hypheothrix tenax Wolle (1879: 282; type locality: Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) with H. tenax G. Martens.
