Note: Hoffmann (1985: 77) established this genus by elevating Lyngbya C. Agardh subgen. Leibleinia Gomont (1892b: 120, 122) to generic rank. Its type species was designated as L. baculum (Gomont) Hoffmann. The generic name traces back to Endlicher (1836 [1836–1840]: 5; 1843: 21), who misspelled it Leiblinia. Endlicher's genus was lectotypified by Drouet (1968: 312) with Conferva confervicola Dillwyn, which is listed in this catalogue as Calothrix confervicola (Dillwyn) C. Agardh. When Linnaeus (1753) is used as the starting point for all cyanophycean nomenclature, as in this catalogue, Leibleinia (Gomont) Hoffmann must be considered a later homonym. We retain it, however, because if later starting points were to be abandoned officially, it would be a likely candidate for conservation.
