INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: India, Saudi Arabia, South Africa.

Note: As explained in the Note to Phormidium limosum (Dillwyn) P. Silva (q.v.), Oscillatoria limosa C. Agardh (1813: 23) is a later homonym of O. limosa (Dillwyn) C. Agardh (1812 [1810–1812]: 35). When later starting points are abandoned, as in this catalogue, a correct name must be found to replace O. limosa C. Agardh. Future study may reveal a suitable synonym. When later starting points are used, however, C. Agardh's second use of the name, being sanctioned by Gomont, is legitimate.
