IOC entry for Microcystis zanardinii

Previous entry: Microcystis sanguinea

Microcystis zanardinii (Hauck) P. Silva, comb. nov.

Palmogloea aeruginosa Zanardini, 1872: 162–163, pl. IX: D (type locality: "Tangion Datu'' [Cape Datu], boundary between Sarawak, Malaysia and West Kalimantan, Indonesia).

Anacystis aeruginosa (Zanardini) Drouet & Daily, 1948: 77.—Isaac, 1971: 2.— Hackett, 1977: 11.— Lawson, 1980: 19.— Teo & Wee, 1983: 14, fig. 1.— Basson, Mohamed, & Arora, 1989: 32.— Phang & Wee, 1991: 55.— Basson, 1992: 222.

Gloeocapsa zanardinii Hauck, 1877: 230.

Microcystis zanardinii (Hauck) P. Silva.

INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Bahrain, Kenya, Maldives, Singapore.

Note: In view of the existence of Microcystis aeruginosa (Kützing) Kützing (1846a: 6; basionym Micraloa aeruginosa Kützing, 1833a: 371, pl. VIII: fig. 23), it is not possible to transfer the oldest name for the present species to Microcystis. Fortunately, there is an available nomenclatural synonym, Gloeocapsa zanardinii. When Hauck (1877) transferred the present species to Gloeocapsa, he was obligated to change the epithet because of the existence of G. aeruginosa Kützing (1843b: 174).

Addendum: Microcystis zanardinii (Hauck) P. Silva was validated in Silva, Basson, & Moe (University of California Publications in Botany 79: 31. 1996).
