Note: In view of the existence of Microcystis montana (Teodoresco) De Toni fil. (1939: no. 570; basionym Clathrocystis montana Teodoresco, 1907: 106, pl. IV: figs. 1–3), it is not possible to transfer the oldest name for the present species to Microcystis. Hence, Palmella ? sanguinea C. Agardh, the oldest synonym cited by Drouet & Daily (1956: 45), is adopted here. Drouet & Daily cited six other synonyms that are listed separately in this catalogue.
