Aphanocapsa richteriana Hieronymus in Hauck & Richter, 1892 [1885–1896]: no. 485 (type locality: near Nimptsch, Silesia, Poland).
Microcystis richteriana (Hieronymus) P. Silva.
Taxonomic synonym:
Aphanocapsa montana Cramer in Wartmann & Schenk, 1862: no. 134 (type locality: Rigi, Schwyz Canton, Switzerland).—Lambert, Steinke, & Naidoo, 1989: 480, fig. 3, tables 2, 3.— G. Subramanian et al., 1989: 310, 313, 315, 318, 319.— Thajuddin & G. Subramanian, 1992a: table III.
INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: India, South Africa.
Note: In view of the existence of Microcystis montana (Teodoresco) De Toni fil. (1939: no. 570; basionym Clathrocystis montana Teodoresco, 1907: 106, pl. IV: figs. 1–3), it is not possible to transfer the oldest name for the present species to Microcystis. Hence, Aphanocapsa richteriana Hieronymus, the only synonym cited by Geitler (1930 [1930–1932]: 160), is adopted here. Drouet & Daily (1956: 48, 56), after examining the holotype of this species (in ZT), assigned it to Anacystis montana (Lightfoot) Drouet & Daily forma montana. Those authors cited only terrestrial and freshwater habitats for this taxon, but Humm & Wicks (1980: 56) included brackish water habitats.
