Siphononema polonicum Geitler, nom. illeg.

Siphononema polonicum Geitler, 1931 [1930–1932]: 446, figs. 265–268, nom. illeg. (syntype localities: Lunz and Raxgebiet, Austria).—Thajuddin & G. Subramanian, 1992b: 20, figs. 3, 4.

INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: India.

Note: The generic name Siphononema as used by Thajuddin & Subramanian applies to an emended concept of the genus. When Geitler (1925a: 332) originally established Siphononema, he referred the material in hand to Pleurocapsa polonica Raciborski (1910), making the combination Siphononema polonicum (Raciborski) Geitler. Later, Geitler (1931 [1930–1932]: 445) realized that Raciborski's material and his own material represented two different species and two different genera. Rather than describing the material in hand as a new genus and new species, Geitler reused the name Siphononema for his emended concept, with the single species S. polonicum. Both the generic and the specific name must be accredited directly to Geitler. They are later homonyms, however, and thus illegitimate.
