ENTOPHYSALIDACEAE

Entophysalis Kützing

Note: As circumscribed by Geitler (1930–1932; 1942), Entophysalis includes Cyanophyceae in which the thallus is a crust composed of erect series of cells (pseudofilaments) that do not produce spores. In sharp contrast, Drouet & Daily (1956) use this genus as a receptacle for all Cyanophyceae assigned by other authors to the Chamaesiphonales and Pleurocapsales as well as the Entophysalidaceae. Of the four species listed here, E. granulosa, the type of the generic name, clearly fits Geitler's circumscription, while E. violacea probably does. The other two species (E. conferta and E. deusta) have been circumscribed by Drouet & Daily to include markedly diverse elements and thus do not fit comfortably in a Geitlerian classification.
