Chroococcus membraninus (Meneghini) Nägeli

Pleurococcus membraninus Meneghini, 1842: 34–35, pl. IV: figs. 1, 2 (type locality: Euganean thermal springs, near Padova, Italy).

Chroococcus membraninus (Meneghini) Nägeli, 1849: 46.—Basson et al., 1977: 227, fig. 36.— Basson, 1979: 60, pl. VII: fig. 36.— D. Jones, 1986: 27, pl. 3.

INDIAN OCEAN DISTRIBUTION: Kuwait, Saudi Arabia.

Note: Drouet & Daily (1956: 77, 80), after examining the holotype of this species (in FI), assigned it to Anacystis thermalis (Meneghini) Drouet & Daily (1952: 221) forma thermalis (Trochiscia thermalis Meneghini, 1837: 334; type locality: Euganean thermal springs, near Padova, Italy). The latter species, which according to Drouet & Daily (1956: 79) usually grows in fresh water and rarely in brackish water, has not been reported from the Indian Ocean. Its name, incidentally, is a later homonym of Anacystis thermalis Copeland (1936: 46–47, fig. 11; type locality: thermal springs, Yellowstone National Park, U.S.A.), a name overlooked by Drouet & Daily.
