Discelium Bridel, 1826.

Only one species of Discelium occurs in the world. This plant is easily recognized by the extremely small, echlorophyllose and ecostate leaves of the gametophyte that arise from a persistent green protonema. The reddish seta is rigidly erect except at its extreme apex, to 2.5 cm long and rather stout. The short capsule is strongly inclined to horizontal. Discelium is restricted to erect and eroded banks of streams and trails very near to the ocean shore in extreme northwestern California.
