Initial Editorial Analysis Nov 1 2001
Source of Report for California | The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Initial Editorial Comments | author citation uncertain, (Nutt.) M. S. Baker & J. C. Clausen ex M. Peck in Kartesz & Meacham
Editorial Recommendation | author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 | 30 Aug 2005 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates: that Viola praemorsa subsp. linguifolia was published by Milo S. Baker (M.S. Baker in Authors of Plant Names) in Madroño 10:128 (1949); that Clausen has been cited along with Baker because he was acknowledged as having collaborated with on the work but he was not actually an author; that Peck (A Manual of the Higher Plants of Oregon 486. 1941) published var. linguifolia but not the subsp.; and that Viola praemorsa subsp. linguifolia was based on Viola linguifolia Nutt. in Torrey & Gray, Flora of North America 1:141 (1838), wherein Torrey and Gray ascribed the name to "Nutt. mss." and quoted Nuttall's description. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Viola praemorsa Douglas ex Lindl. subsp. linguifolia (Nutt.) M. S. Baker, from Viola praemorsa Douglas ex Lindl. subsp. linguifolia (Torr. & A. Gray) M. S. Baker & J. C. Clausen previously in this Index, 31 Aug 2005.]
Correspondence 2 | 10 Sep 2008 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that Greenhouse revisited publication of Viola praemorsa subsp. linguifolia (Madroño 10:128. 1949) and revised his earlier conclusion regarding the author citation; that although Baker didn't specify an author citation for the comb. nov. on page 128, he did so in the caption on page 120 for Plate 7, where he cited "(Nutt. ex Torr. and Gray) Baker and Clausen" for this subsp., in reference to Jens Clausen (J.C. Clausen in Authors of Plant Names), and that the analysis in Correspondence 1 is correct for the basionym Viola linguifolia Nutt. [Therefore, author citation corrected (in part back) to Viola praemorsa Douglas ex Lindl. subsp. linguifolia (Nutt.) M.S. Baker & J.C. Clausen., from Viola praemorsa Douglas ex Lindl. subsp. linguifolia (Nutt.) M. S. Baker previously in this Index, 11 Sep 2008.]
