Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Current Jepson Flora Project Synonyms Viola pinetorum Greene var. grisea (Jeps.) R. J. Little; Viola purpurea Kellogg subsp. xerophyta M.S. Baker & J.C. Clausen, in part; Viola purpurea Kellogg var. grisea Jeps. [A search of International Plant Names Index revealed no Viola pinetorum var. grisea Jeps., and there is no other information suggesting it has ever been published (although Viola purpurea Kellogg var. grisea Jeps. has been published and in fact serves as the basionym for the new combination, Viola pinetorum Greene var. grisea (Jeps.) R. J. Little), so that Viola pinetorum var. grisea Jeps. was removed from this list of "Current Jepson Flora Project synonyms" on 31 Jan 2012.]

Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 includes a pdf of paper by R. John Little (JBRIT 5:633. 2011), author of Viola for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], in which the new combination Viola pinetorum Greene var. grisea (Jeps.) R. J. Little is made, "In keeping with the use of varieties for infraspecific taxa in the treatment of Viola for the Flora of North America (Little & McKinney, in prep.) ...", as stated in the abstract. [In keeping with the use of subspecies for infraspecific taxa throughout the treatment of Viola in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] as well as The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], Viola pinetorum Greene subsp. grisea (Jeps.) R. J. Little is hereby retained as the accepted name for this taxon, with Viola pinetorum Greene var. grisea (Jeps.) R. J. Little as a syn.]
