| Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 states that Rumex salicifolius var. mexicanus probably does not occur in CA, based on indication of "In Mexico circa Leon" in protologue of basionym. [Rumex salicifolius subsp. triangularis var. mexicanus appears to be listed as first synonym under Rumex salicifolius in HCOT, but for some reason (evidently because it is a new combination there) is in all caps (unlike other syns), possibly leading to mistaken conclusion that it is reported for California there (distribution in HCOT for Rumex salicifolius includes "...w. N. Am. from Alas. to Baja CA..."). It is unclear why C. L. Hitchcock would publish this new combination in HCOT if the taxon does not occur in the area covered, but the fact it is not included in the key to the "more conspicuous variants" of the species (presumably in the area covered) suggests that although it is recognized taxonomically it does not occur in the area covered]. | |
