Bot. 104(10):1581-1595. 2017) in which it is stated, "Three individuals sampled from Southern California form a well--supported clade sister to remaining Q. wislizeni samples, consistent with previous interpretations that these southern trees are genetically distinct. However, this southern grouping does not correspond morphologically to Q. wislizeni var. frutescens as described by Engelmann, with neither PCA data set distinguishing these samples from the rest of Q. wislizeni." [Therefore, Quercus wislizeni A.DC. var. frutescens Engelm. is to be treated as a synonym of Quercus wislizeni A.DC..]
