Editorial Comments 1
|
Correspondence 1 indicates that Kellogg's publication of this name (spelled vaccinifolia) in Proc. Calif. Acad. Sci. 1:96 (1854) was provisional and therefore not valid, and that the validating publication was by M. K. Curran (Curran in Authors of Plant Names) in Bull. Calif. Acad. Sci. 1:146 (1885), where she accepted Kellogg's name and referred back to his original description [thereby attributing the name to him; Therefore, author citation corrected to Quercus vacciniifolia Kellogg ex Curran, from Quercus vacciniifolia Kellogg previously in this Index, 14 Nov 2003].

Editorial Comments 2

Correspondence 2 indicates that the Kellogg publication states "Dr. Kellogg exhibited a drawing of a new species of Oak, to which was given the provisional name of Quercus Vaccinifolia - Kellogg - or Huckleberry-leaf Oak", and that there is no entry for Vaccinifolia (or the alternate spelling) in ING, so that the epithet evidently refers to the resemblance of the leaves to those of the genus Vaccinium, or huckleberry. [If the plant were named for a genus Vaccinifolia (a possibility suggested by the apparent capitalization of the word by Kellogg), the epithet would be "vaccinifolia"; if, as appears to be the case, it were named for the resemblance of the leaves to those of the genus Vaccinium (the interpretation apparently made by Kartesz & Meacham), the epithet would be "vacciniifolia", according to Art. 60.8 and examples, ICBN 2000.]

Editorial Comments 3

Correspondence 3 indicates, courtesy of Kanchi Gandhi, the following: Quercus vaccinifolia Kellogg ex Curran, Bull. Calif. Acad. Sci. 1: 146. 1885.// Quercus vacciniifolia Kellogg, Proc. Calif. Acad. Sci. 1:96. 1855 (vaccinifolia)" is invalid (provisional name).// Quercus vacciniifolia Kellogg, Sci. Opin. 3:52. 1870 (vaccinifolia)" is valid. [The foregoing states that although Kellogg's 1855 name is invalid, his 1870 name is valid, and predates that of Curran (1885), leaving us with Kellogg alone as the correct citation. Therefore, author citation corrected to Quercus vacciniifolia Kellogg, from Quercus vacciniifolia Kellogg ex Curran previously in this Index, 13 Jun 2011.]

Editorial Comments 4

Correspondence 4 indicates (mostly according to John Landon) that Quercus vacciniifolia was effectively but invalidly published by Kellogg in 1857 (Proc. Calif. Acad. Nat. Sci. 1: 96. 1857, 'Vaccinifolia' [year given as 1855 in Correspondence 3, above]), and that the earliest publication of the name that was both effective and valid is now thought to have been accomplished in 1863 by John Shertzer Hittell (1825-1901) in the first edition of The Resources of California (newspaper announcements in the Press (Philadelphia) on 7 Mar 1863 and in the Philadelphia Inquirer on 11 Mar 1863 fix the date at 7 Mar 1863; Hittell's name is misspelled "Hittel" on the title page but was corrected to "Hittell" in later editions). According to Landon, Rafaël Govaerts has confirmed that the publication by Hittell is valid, and that Hittell did not ascribe the name to Kellogg in the protologue. Landon therefore proposed that the correct citation is Quercus vacciniifolia Hittell (Resources Calif. 101. 7 Mar 1863, as 'vaccinifolia'). [Therefore, author citation corrected to Quercus vacciniifolia Hittell, from Quercus vacciniifolia Kellogg previously in this Index, 16 Sep 2020.]
