Initial Editorial Analysis Nov 1 2001
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 8 Feb 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that the synonyms as given in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] (third printing) are "P. communis Trin., incl. var. berlandieri (Fourn.) Fern.", and that the epithet australis was mistakenly used [in Phragmites australis var. berlandieri (E. Fourn.) Fernald] in the ICPN entry instead of communis. [The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] synonym corrected to Phragmites communis Trin. var. berlandieri (E. Fourn.) Fernald, from Phragmites australis var. berlandieri (E. Fourn.) Fernald originally in this Index, 4 Mar 2003.]
Correspondence 2 29 Mar 2005 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that the native lineage of Phragmites australis found in California (and across most of North America) has been named Phragmites australis subsp. americanus Saltonstall, P.M. Peterson, & Soreng (SIDA 21:690--691. 2004), based on genetic and morphological distinctions that separate it from an introduced European lineage (not referred to subspecifically) also found in CA. [Therefore, pending acceptance by The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Author or reviewer, Phragmites australis subsp. americanus Saltonstall, P.M. Peterson, & Soreng, a native taxon, and possibly one or more introduced subspecies to be recognized in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2].]
