Dryopteris arguta (Kaulf.) Watt

Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Initial Editorial Analysis Nov 1 2001
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Initial Editorial Comments author citation uncertain, Kartesz & Meacham, K, Munz, Lellinger all have (Kaulf.) Watt.
Editorial Recommendation author citation to be checked [resolved, then reversed]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Jun 2000 pers. comm. from Alan R. Smith see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates author citation correct as cited.
Correspondence 2 $ 19 Oct 2001 e-mail from Margriet Wetherwax see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 confirms, documents earlier resolution of author citation.
Correspondence 3 28 Jan 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that UC1597992, collected by Alan Smith at Jack William Cave, Lava Beds National Monument, Siskiyou Co., is a voucher for the occurrence of this taxon on the Modoc Plateau. Furthermore, Alan Smith, The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] author, [personal communication to Greenhouse] feels that this species is limited on the Modoc Plateau to the specialized cave environment found at Lava Beds National Monument, so that "MP (caves in Lava Beds National Monument)" is to be added to the range given in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1].
Correspondence 4 27 Mar 2021 e-mail from Bruce Baldwin, including forwarded emails from Dylan Neubauer, Susan Fawcett, and Alan Smith see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 Correspondence 4 indicates that, in response to a question raised by Neubauer, Fawcett found that the combination was made correctly by Watt, not Maxon, and that both Bruce Baldwin and Alan Smith concur (despite Smith's earlier position under Correspondence 1 above). Fawcett's letter to Smith states, "A question came up regarding the correct combining authority for Dryopteris arguta (Kaulf); whether it should be Watt or Maxon.//Watt is earlier (1866) and does cite the basionym '(Kaulf. 242)' in accordance with Article 41.1. [which states "In order to be validly published, a new combination, name at new rank, or replacement name must be accompanied by a reference to the basionym or replaced synonym. (See Art. 6.10 and 6.11)"] and Article 41.3. [which states "Before 1 January 1953 an indirect reference (see Art. 38.14) to a basionym or replaced synonym is sufficient for valid publication of a new combination, name at new rank, or replacement name. Therefore, errors in the citation of the basionym or replaced synonym, or in author citation (Art. 46), do not affect valid publication of such names."] [In his response to Fawcett, Smith stated that there is uncertainty about the date of publication of the Watt name (1867, 1868, and 1869 have all been in play), but all nevertheless still predate the Maxon name (1921). [Therefore, author citation corrected to Dryopteris arguta (Kaulf.) Watt, from Dryopteris arguta (Kaulf.) Maxon previously in this Index, 30 Mar 2021.]
