Initial Editorial Comments
according to Wilken, the Europeans consider this a distinct species, and it is naturalized along roadsides in DSon (Imperial Co.), where it hybridizes with cultivated beet populations (McFarlaine, J. S. 1975. Amer. Soc. of Sugar Beet Technologists (Fort Collins) 18(3):245-251); not indicated for N. Am. in Kartesz & Meacham; not in Gray Card Index.

Editorial Comments 1
Correspondence 1 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Beta macrocarpa Guss. is to be treated as a synonym of Beta vulgaris L. subsp. vulgaris, which is said in a note under Beta vulgaris L. subsp. maritima (L.) Arcang. to be an occasional "waif in drainage ditches, irrigation channels close to cult fields, DSon; gen in e US." [and as such it should have been included in a key to members of the genus and there should have been a description provided for access online.]
