Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)

Source of Report for California Correspondence 1
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Bob Allen see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Platanus X acerifolia is to be taxonomically recognized as well as treated as a waif in CA, with a note stating that the taxon is possibly a stable hybrid between Platanus occidentalis L. and Platanus orientalis L. or a non-hybrid cultivar of the latter.
Correspondence 2 26 Jul 2010 e-mail from Matt Ritter to David J. Keil see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that for the hybrid between Platanus occidentalis and Platanus orientalis, the correct name is Platanus X hispanica Mill. ex Muenchh., as proposed by Philip Miller and published by Otto von Muenchhausen in 1770 in Der Hausvater 5:229, because it has priority over the more commonly used Platanus X acerifolia (Aiton) Willd., which was published later, in 1805, in Species Plantarum 4:474.
