a The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], as cited in Kartesz & Meacham
b Preston e-mail of 5 Jul 2000, "S[cirpus] tuberosus Desf. = Schoenoplectus glaucus (Lam.) Kartesz; Smith, S. G., and G. Yatskievych. 1996. Notes on the genus Scirpus sensu lato in Missouri. Rhodora 98:168-179.
Initial Editorial Comments possibly as Scirpus lacustris subsp. glaucus (Smith) Hartman (neither author defined in Munz), listed as synonym of Scirpus acutus in Munz Supplement (p.183); Scirpus glaucus Lam. listed as synonym in Kartesz & Meacham; neither Schoenoplectus glaucus nor Scirpus glaucus mentioned in any way in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] (despite Kartesz & Meacham citation); neither Scirpus tuberosus nor Schoenoplectus glaucus evident in Smith and Yatskievych 1996 (despite Preston citation); in Smith, 1995 (New combinations in North American Schoenoplectus, Bolboschoenus, Isolepis, and Trichophorum. Novon 5:97-102), Scirpus glaucus Lam. = Bolboschoenus glaucus (Lam.) S. G. Sm., and Scirpus tuberosus Desf. is indicated as having been misapplied to Scirpus glaucus Lam.; in Kartesz & Meacham, Scirpus tuberosus auct. non Desf. = Schoenoplectus glaucus (Lam.) Kartesz; genus spelled "Bolboschoenus", despite Preston citation.
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 21 Feb 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that S. Galen Smith (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] co-author for Scirpus), in Flora North America Vol 23:43 (2003), uses Bolboschoenus glaucus (Lam.) S. G. Sm. for plants provisionally treated in this Index as Schoenoplectus glaucus (Lam.) Kartesz, and evidently for plants treated in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] and elsewhere as Scirpus tuberosus, which he considers to be a name that has been misapplied to California plants.
Correspondence 2 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by S. Galen Smith see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Scirpus tuberosus Desf. is to be treated as a name that in California has been misapplied to pls belonging instead to Bolboschoenus glaucus (Lam.) S.G. Sm., for which Schoenoplectus glaucus (Lam.) Kartesz is to be listed as syn.
