Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 2 Jun 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Charles J. Sheviak (Flora North America, Vol. 26:551--571. 2002) has verified three specimens of Platanthera purpurascens from CA, (382932, 382940 at RSA; A12358 at NYS), all from the same meadow in Yosemite National Park, Mariposa Co. (c SNH), and Ronald Coleman (The Wild Orchids of California, 1995, p. 147) reported this species from Modoc Co., apparently unvouchered. [See also entries for Platanthera hyperborea, Platanthera sparsiflora.]
Correspondence 2 21 Oct 2003 Interchange Feedback from Dean Wm Taylor see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that, according to correspondence between Charles J. Sheviak and Alison Colwell, Sheviak is now not certain the name Platanthera purpurascens should be applied to California material, and that the plants might belong instead toPlatanthera stricta; also that, according to Taylor's notes based on study of the two specimens at RSA, there is a conflict as to the accession numbers given in the Interchange.
Correspondence 3 3 Mar 2008 e-mail from Margriet Wetherwax see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 includes reference to the protologue of Platanthera yosemitensis, Madrono 54(1): 86 (-93; figs. 1-2), 2007, in which all three specimens assigned by Sheviak in Correspondence 1 to Platanthera purpurascens are designated (by Colwell, Sheviak, and Moore) as paratypes for the new species, thus negating all available evidence that Platanthera purpurascens occurs in CA, and it is also stated, on p. 86, that reports of Platanthera purpurascens from the central Sierra Nevada (Coleman in 1995; Sheviak in 2002) were based on a single fragmentary specimen that belongs instead to Platanthera yosemitensis, and that Platanthera purpurascens therefore evidently only occurs in the southern Rocky Mountains.
Correspondence 4 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Ronald A. Coleman see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 Correspondence 4 confirms that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Platanthera hyperborea Lindl. var. purpurascens (Rydb.) Luer. [Platanthera purpurascens (Rydb.) Sheviak & W. F. Jenn.] is to be treated as a name that has been misapplied to plants that belong instead to Platanthera yosemitensis Colwell, Sheviak, & P.E. Moore, and that Platanthera hyperborea Lindl. var. purpurascens (Rydb.) Luer. [Platanthera purpurascens (Rydb.) Sheviak & W. F. Jenn.] does not occur in CA.
