Correspondence appended verbatim is pertinent to The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] account: "Need historical quads for TUL Co. Threatened by grazing, agriculture, and development. See Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington 17:99 (1904) for original description."

Editorial Comments 2
|
Correspondence 2 indicates that the citation for the "original description" for Atriplex joaquiniana A. Nelson [as given in Editorial Comments 1] is incorrect; that the taxon was first described as Atriplex spicata S. Watson (Proc. Amer. Acad. 9:108. 1874), a name that was pre-empted at the time; that Atriplex joaquiniana A. Nelson (Proc. Biol. Soc. Wash. 17: 99. 1904) was later published as a substitute based on the same type and is therefore a nomen novum; that the protologue or "original description" was the Watson circumscription [description], even though the name he chose was pre-occupied; that Atriplex joaquiniana A. Nelson was a nomenclatural substitution that changes neither the type nor the circumscription; and that it would be helpful to state, "see Proc. Amer. Acad. 9:108. 1874 for original description and Proc. Biol. Soc. Wash. 17: 99. 1904 for nomenclature."

Editorial Comments 3
|
Correspondence 3 indicates: that Atriplex joaquinana was published by Aven Nelson (A. Nelson in Authors of Plant Names) in Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington 17(12):99 (1904); that the protologue referred back to the description and type of Atriplex spicata S. Watson, illeg. (Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences 9:108. 1874), not A. spicata Stokes 1812; that Nelson spelled the epithet "joaquinana" evidently referring back to the type locality, San Joaquin Valley, as given by Watson; and that this spelling (joaquinana) is in accordance with ICBN 2006 Rec. 60D.1, which states "An epithet derived from a geographical name is preferably an adjective and usually takes the termination -ensis, -(a)nus, -inus, or -icus." and therefore was correct as published. [Therefore, spelling of epithet corrected to Atriplex joaquinana A. Nelson, from Atriplex joaquiniana A. Nelson previously in this Index, 8 Jan 2009.]

Editorial Comments 4

Correspondence 4 indicates, as a note under the genus, "In revised taxonomy, too late for full treatment here, Atriplex joaquinana ... moved to Extriplex ... [Zacharias & Baldwin 2010 Syst Bot 35(4):839--857].". [Zacharias & Baldwin (2010) treated Atriplex joaquinana A. Nelson as a synonym of Extriplex joaquinana (A. Nelson) E.H. Zacharias.]
