| Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates: that the JEPS84876 collection of Xanthisma texanum subsp. drummondii [in the Consortium of California Herbaria Database] should not be regarded as a bona fide collection from Del Norte County [or from CA] in lieu of another record to confirm the immense disjunction (both geographically and ecologically) from its known range, in Oklahoma, Texas -- and Arizona, where Kartesz & Meacham (1999) regard it as an apparent introduction; that although the identification is not in question, the original source of the specimen is, based on label data indicating that the plants were passed from one person (Von Stein, possibly the collector) to another (Ruby Van Deventer, of Smith River), without a known date of collection; that the statement "Near summit of Little Grayback...according to Von Stein" leaves open the possibility that a third party may have made the actual collection; and that Baldwin's initial thought that possibly "Little Grayback" referred to serpentine [not included among the known habitat conditions of this species] was dispelled by a write-up he saw online that explained that "grayback" was an old-time miners' expression for lice, which infested their clothing and bedding. | |||||
