Source of Report for California Correspondence 1
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Ronald A. Coleman see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Platanthera yosemitensis Colwell, Sheviak, & P.E. Moore is to be recognized and treated as native to CA.
Correspondence 2 3 Mar 2008 e-mail from Margriet Wetherwax see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 includes reference to the protologue of Platanthera yosemitensis, Madrono 54(1): 86 (-93; figs. 1-2), 2007, in which all three specimens assigned by Sheviak in Correspondence 1 [under Platanthera purpurascens] to Platanthera purpurascens are designated (by Colwell, Sheviak, and Moore) as paratypes for the new species, thus negating all available evidence that Platanthera purpurascens occurs in CA, and it is also stated, on p. 86, that reports of Platanthera purpurascens from the central Sierra Nevada (Coleman in 1995; Sheviak in 2002) were based on a single fragmentary specimen that belongs instead to Platanthera yosemitensis, and that Platanthera purpurascens therefore evidently only occurs in the southern Rocky Mountains.
Correspondence 3 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Ronald A. Coleman see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 confirms that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Platanthera hyperborea Lindl. var. purpurascens (Rydb.) Luer. [Platanthera purpurascens (Rydb.) Sheviak & W. F. Jenn.] is to be treated as a name that has been misapplied to plants that belong instead to Platanthera yosemitensis Colwell, Sheviak, & P.E. Moore, and that Platanthera hyperborea Lindl. var. purpurascens (Rydb.) Luer. [Platanthera purpurascens (Rydb.) Sheviak & W. F. Jenn.] does not occur in CA.
