Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa (Engelm. & J. M. Bigelow) F. M. Knuth var. major (Engelm.) Pinkava
CACTACEAE
Initial Editorial Analysis 7 Apr 2011
Source of Report for California Correspondence 1
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 11 Mar 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that, according to Marc Baker (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] co-author for Opuntia), there now is wide acceptance of Cylindropuntia for the "true chollas", so that Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa (Engelm. & J. M. Bigelow) F. M. Knuth var. major (Engelm.) Pinkava (in J. Arizona-Nevada Acad. Sci. 32:42. 1999) is to be used for the taxon treated elsewhere [e.g., Munz Southern California Flora, Kartesz & Meacham] as Opuntia acanthocarpa var. major (Engelm. & J. M. Bigelow) L. D. Benson, if this taxon is confirmed for California [see Correspondence 2].
Correspondence 2 11 Mar 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that this taxon was reported [for CA] by Benson in The Cacti of the United States and Canada p. 295 (1982) from near Vidal Junction, Riverside Co., but that Vidal Junction is instead in San Bernardino Co. [This taxon will be added to the California flora, as Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa var. major (Engelm.) Pinkava, pending location and verification of vouchers.]
Correspondence 3 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Marc Baker, Bruce D. Parfitt, & Jon Rebman see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 evidently does not address Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa (Engelm. & J. M. Bigelow) F. M. Knuth var. major (Engelm.) Pinkava. [In the treatment of Cylindropuntia for Flora North America, authored by Donald Pinkava, Opuntia acanthocarpa Engelm. & J. M. Bigelow var. major (Engelm. & J. M. Bigelow) L. D. Benson, as Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa (Engelm. & J.M. Bigelow) F.M. Knuth var. major (Engelm.) Pinkava, indicated for "Sonoran Desert, sandy flats, washes, rocky slopes; 300-900 m; Ariz.; Mexico (Sonora).", strongly suggesting, together with its exclusion from the treatment for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], that it does not occur in CA.]
