Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 | 8 Mar 2006 e-mail from Jeffrey A. Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates: that Mimulus aurantiacus subsp. australis was published by Philip A. Munz (Munz in Authors of Plant Names) in Aliso 4:98 (1958); that Munz didn't ascribe his combination to McMinn although he apparently thought he was basing it on Diplacus australis McMinn (Madrono 11:58. 1951); that Diplacus australis McMinn actually was not validly published -- because, as Munz himself noted, "McMinn gave no Latin diagnosis" (which was required in 1951) -- and therefore cannot serve as a basionym; and that since Munz did supply a Latin diagnosis, he is properly cited as the author of a new subspecies. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Mimulus aurantiacus Curtis subsp. australis Munz, from Mimulus aurantiacus Curtis subsp. australis McMinn ex Munz previously in this Index, 10 Mar 2006.]
Correspondence 2 | Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates, in a note under Mimulus aurantiacus Curtis, that Mimulus aurantiacus Curtis subsp. australis Munz represents "intervarietal hybrids". [Because the involved varieties as well as the fertility of the hybrids are not addressed, a Current Status of unresolved is appropriate at this time.]
Correspondence 3 | Treatment and author notes submitted since The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 | Correspondence 3 indicates that since The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] an entity included in Mimulus aurantiacus Curtis var. pubescens_ (Torr.) D.M. Thomps. in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] is to be treated as Diplacus australis (Munz) Tulig, pro hybr..
