Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 23 Aug 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates: that the three specimens of Saxifraga punctata subsp. arguta in SMASCH have been redetermined as Saxifraga odontoloma Piper using the key in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]; that Piper published the name Saxifraga odontophylla sp. nov. (Contr. U. S. Natl. Herb. 11:314. 1906), which turned out to be a later homonym of Saxifraga odontophylla Wall 1834, and therefore illegitimate; and that Piper, therefore, later published Saxifraga odontoloma nom. nov., based on his Saxifraga odontophylla, about which he had stated (1906), "This species has long passed in American herbaria as S. punctata L., a rare European species." [Therefore, both Saxifraga punctata L. and Saxifraga punctata L. subsp. arguta (D. Don) Hultén, are considered to have been misapplied to California plants.]
