Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 3 Jan 2002 e-mail from Barbara Ertter (forwarded e-mail from Michael A. Vincent) see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates confirmation of Current Status, as well as author citation of McDermott, by Michael A. Vincent.
Correspondence 2 16 Jul 2002 e-mail from Barbara Ertter, including forwarded e-mail from Michael Vincent see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that, according to Michael A. Vincent: Trifolium depauperatum Desv. var. amplectens (Torr. & A. Gray) McDermott and Trifolium depauperatum Desv. var. truncatum (Greene) Isely are best distinguished by the fruits, not stipitate and 3-4+/- mm long (var. amplectens).vs. stipitate and 2-3+/- mm long (var. truncatum) [essentially repeats key characters from The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]]; also, that T. amplectens var. diversifolium (Nutt.) Jeps. is a synonym of T. depauperatum var. truncatum (Greene) McDerm., and we use truncatum instead of diversifolium since McDermott's varietal name predates Jepson's by 15 years [significance unclear].
