Correspondence 1 indicates that Monardella villosa var. obispoensis (basionym of Monardella villosa subsp. obispoensis) was published by Jepson (Jeps. in Authors of Plant Names) in A Flora of California 3: 435. 1943, wherein Jepson ascribed the name to Hoover but supplied his own short Latin description.
