Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)

Current Jepson Flora Project Synonyms Eriogonum modocense Greene
Current Jepson Flora Project Misapplied Names Eriogonum umbellatum var. polyanthum (Benth.) M.E. Jones, in part [see Correspondence 2]
Initial Editorial Analysis 3 Mar 2005
Source of Report for California James L. Reveal. Personal communication, as cited in Kartesz & Meacham
Initial Editorial Comments indicated for California to ID, WA in Kartesz & Meacham; indicated for Modoc to Plumas cos. in Munz; in no way mentioned in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 18 Feb 2005 e-mail from James L. Reveal see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Eriogonum umbellatum Torr. var. modocense (Greene) S. Stokes will be recognized for California in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], for the following counties: Butte, Lassen, Modoc, Plumas, Shasta, Siskiyou.
Correspondence 2 23 Apr 2014, from Editor of this Index see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that the Editor of this Index, also the Scientific Editor of the treatment of the family for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], evidently misinterpreted the treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by James L. Reveal, in that Eriogonum umbellatum Torr. var. polyanthum (Benth.) M. E. Jones is indicated in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] as native to and endemic to CA, albeit uncollected in the state for over 100 years according to a note, and in Flora North America as being native to and endemic to CA; the statement in Flora North America that "The name var. polyanthum has been misapplied in California to plants here attributed to var. modocense and var. dumosum." evidently means, more precisely, that the name var. polyanthum has been misapplied in some but not all cases in California to plants here attributed to var. modocense and var. dumosum; there are 243 records in CCH identified as Eriogonum umbellatum Torr. var. polyanthum (Benth.) M. E. Jones, including four collected in 1966 and 1971 by collectors including Reveal, so that the statement about the 100 drought in collecting the taxon in California evidently is in error as well. [Therefore, a Current Status of Jepson Flora Project-1 is appropriate, and it is correct to say that in California Eriogonum umbellatum Torr. var. polyanthum (Benth.) M. E. Jones has been misapplied sometimes (i.e., in part) to plants belonging instead to Eriogonum umbellatum Torr. var. dumosum (Greene) Reveal and Eriogonum umbellatum Torr. var. modocense (Greene) S. Stokes.]
