Correspondence 1 indicates: that Ceanothus integerrimus var. californicus was published by Gilbert Thereon Benson (G.T. Benson in Authors of Plant Names) in Contributions from the Dudley Herbarium 2:120 (1930); that although Benson listed Ceanothus californicus Kellogg (Proc. Cal. Acad. 1:54. 1855) as a synonym and treated it as a basionym, that name was provisional, and therefore not validly published, and therefore not available to serve as a basionym; and that Benson also listed Ceanothus nevadensis Kellogg (Proc. Cal. Acad. 2:152. 1863) as a synonym, which serves as reference to Kellogg's earlier description(s), thereby validating his name as a var. nov.. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Ceanothus integerrimus Hook. & Arn. var. californicus G. T. Benson, from Ceanothus integerrimus Hook. & Arn. var. californicus (Kellogg) G. T. Benson previously in this Index, 7 May 2008.]
