Microsteris gracilis (Hook.) Greene subsp. humilis (Greene) V. E. Grant
POLEMONIACEAE
·

Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Initial Editorial Analysis 20 Dec 2007
Notes on Publication of Name Aliso 4: 96. 1958
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] (added manually by Rosatti)
Initial Editorial Comments listed as synonym of Phlox gracilis in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], but possibly returned to Microsteris and recognized by J. M. Porter & L. A. Johnson since The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] (A Phylogenetic Classification of Polemoniaceae, Aliso 19(1):55-91. 2000); Porter & Johnson (00) recognize Microsteris gracilis (Hook.) Greene subsp. humilior (Greene) H. Mason, citing "Abrams, Ill. fl. Pacific States v.3, p.413. 1951", but that citation is the protologue of Phlox gracilis (Hook.) Greene subsp. humilis (Greene) H. Mason, which cites Collomia gracilis var. humilior Hook. among the synonyms In discussing Microsteris gracilis subsp. humilior (Greene) H. Mason, Porter & Johnson (00) refer to "Cronquist 1984" (Intermountain Flora Vol. 4:108), in which Microsteris gracilis var. humilior (Hook.) Cronq. is recognized, and evidently indicated for California ("arid regions from e. Wash. and s. B.C. to Baja Calif., eastward to..."; Cronquist (1984) also indicates Microsteris gracilis var. gracilis for CA. The correct name for the taxon referred to as Microsteris gracilis (Hook.) Greene subsp. humilior (Greene) H. Mason by Porter & Johnson (00) is uncertain, but probably is Microsteris gracilis (Hook.) Greene subsp. humilis (Greene) V. E. Grant, which is listed as synonym of Phlox gracilis in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1].
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 9 Jan 2002 e-mail from Margriet Wetherwax (forwarded e-mail from J. Mark Porter) see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 confirms that Microsteris gracilis subsp. humilior is ined., and that Microsteris gracilis subsp. humilis is the name that Porter uses for this taxon.
Correspondence 2 $ 8 Feb 2002, from Margriet Wetherwax see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2confirms retention of Phlox gracilis, including numerous subspp. and vars., in Phlox, as opposed to treating them in Microsteris, pending further study [confirming Current Status as 1a].
Correspondence 3 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Robert Patterson & Carolyn J. Ferguson see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Microsteris gracilis (Hook.) Greene subsp. humilis (Greene) V. E. Grant is to be treated as a synonym of Microsteris gracilis (Hook.) Greene, and that no infraspecific taxa are to be recognized in the species.
