Correspondence 1 indicates that there is disagreement regarding the spelling of the specific epithet in Spirodela poly(r)rhiza, in that: the name was published by M.J. Schleiden (Schleid. in Authors of Plant Names) with a double "l" [instead of a double "r"], in Linnaea 13:392 (1839), based on Lemna polyrhiza L., with a single "l" [instead of a single r; that is, not counting the first "l" in polyrhiza] (Species Plantarum 2:970--971. 1753); that the compound epithet is formed from two Greek roots, poly- and -rhiza; that Stearn, in addressing the classical spelling of such epithets (Botanical Latin, ed. 4:261. 1992), states that classically an additional "r" is inserted before rhiza when preceded by a vowel (yielding polyrrhiza); that, however, Stearn goes on to state "but as many reputable authors, Linnaeus among them, have omitted this additional r, it is best regarded as optional and an author's original spelling, as in Lemna polyrhiza, should be accepted."; that therefore Spirodela polyrhiza would be the correct spelling; and that Greenhouse found nothing in ICBN (2006) Art. 60 that would require a "correction" to add an extra"r"; and that he agrees with Stearn, International Plant Names Index, TROPICOS, Munz, and Jepson that Spirodela polyrhiza is correct.
