a Hrusa et al., ms later published in Madrono 49(2)61-98. 2002: DISTRIBUTION: SCo.; STATUS: probable escape from cultivation, may be a waif.; NOTES: First report for California of this widespread weed. Native (apparently) from Arizona, New Mexico, Texas to South America. Our material referable to the var. macrocephalum (DC.) Cronq. (P. macrocephalum DC.). Apparently used medicinally among the local latinos in southern California and occasionally cultivated there.

(CDA): NOTES: First report for California of this widespread weedy plant, but probably casual as an escape from cultivation. Native (apparently) from Arizona, New Mexico, Texas to South America. Our material referable to the var. macrocephalum (DC.) Cronq. (P. macrocephalum DC.). Apparently used medicinally and perhaps cultivated in southern California for that purpose.
