Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Initial Editorial Analysis 9 Dec 2009
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Initial Editorial Comments "PRESUMED EXTINCT" in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1].
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 24 Aug 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates: that the California Native Plant Society (California Native Plant Society). 2004. Inventory of Rare and Endangered Plants (online edition, v6-04c) includes the report that Sidalcea keckii has been "Rediscovered in 1992 by J. Stebbins and K. Kirkpatrick"; that John Stebbins, in an 8 Jan 2004 e-mail [to Greenhouse], stated "the populations at Tivy Mtn. are alive and well ... I have surveyed the type locality (White River in S. Tulare County) twice and although the habitat is still intact have not seen it. The population near Porterville where I 'rediscovered' it in 1991 is now an orchard and a quarry!. So it is quite possible that our Tivy Mtn. Fresno Co. site is indeed the only one extant."
Correspondence 2 24 Aug 2004 e-mail from Bruce Baldwin, forwarded from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 confirms that Sidalcea keckii Wiggins is both extant and worthy of taxonomic recognition, based on the fact that Katarina Andreasen sampled it in her investigation of Sidalcea [at UC Berkeley] and confirmed that it was distinct from its sister-group, Sidalcea diploscypha, as reported in Andreasen, K. and Baldwin, B. G. 2003. Reexamination of relationships, habital evolution, and phylogeography of checker mallows (Sidalcea; Malvaceae) based on molecular phylogenetic data. American Journal of Botany 90: 436-444.
Correspondence 3 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Steven R. Hill see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 confirms that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Sidalcea keckii Wiggins is to be recognized and treated as native, as well as extant, in CA.
