Correspondence 1 indicates that in Flora North America, Setaria pumila (Poir.) Roem. & Schult. subsp. pallidefusca (Schumach.) B. K. Simon (note spelling of subspecific epithet) is indicated LA and OR [reported as collected in the past on ballast dumps in Portland, OR], but not CA, and that Setaria pumila (Poir.) Roem. & Schult. subsp. pumila is described as a common weed throughout temperate North America [including CA].

Correspondence 2 indicates: that Setaria lutescens (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] syn) was published by F. Tracy Hubbard (F.T. Hubb. in Authors of Plant Names) in Rhodora 18: 232 (1916) based on Chaetochloa lutescens published by Stephen C. Stuntz (Stuntz in Authors of Plant Names) (in U.S. Department of Agriculture. Bureau of Plant Industry. Inventory of seeds and plants imported by the office of foreign seed and plant introduction 31:36, 86. 1914); that although Stuntz indicated that he was basing his name on Panicum lutescens Weigel (Observationes Botanicae 20. 1772), a secondary source states that the Weigel name was "nom. illeg., described and validly published, but name definitely not accepted by the author, cited as synonym of Panicum glaucum L."; that if the name (Panicum lutescens Weigel) was not accepted by the the author, Weigel, even though a description was provided, it in fact was not actually validly published according to ICBN (2000) Art. 34.1(a); and that, however, accepting that Weigel did provide a description for Panicum lutescens, we can still accept the publication of Chaetochloa lutescens by Stuntz as validated by reference to Weigel's description with the citation Chaetochloa lutescens Stuntz 1914. [Therefore, author citation of The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] synonym corrected to Setaria lutescens (Stuntz) F. T. Hubb., from Setaria lutescens (Weigel) Hubb. previously in this Index, 19 Sep 2007.]
