Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 14 Aug 2006 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Malacothamnus fasciculatus (Nutt. ex Torr. & A. Gray) Greene (Leaflets of botanical observation and criticism 1:208. 1906) is the correct, expanded author citation, in that the combination was based on Malva fasciculata Nutt. ex Torr. & A. Gray (A Flora of North America 1:225. 1838), which Torr. & A. Gray ascribed to "Nutt. mss" but for which they provided their own description. [Therefore, author citation expanded to Malacothamnus fasciculatus (Nutt. ex Torr. & A. Gray) Greene, from Malacothamnus fasciculatus (Torr. & A. Gray) Greene previously in this Index, 15 Aug 2006.]
Correspondence 2 8 Nov 2013 e-mail from Richard Moe see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that Malvastrum thurberi A. Gray was treated as a synonym of Malacothamnus fasciculatus (Nutt. ex Torr. & A. Gray) Greene by Jepson (1936. Flora of California 2:501) and Fryxell (1988. Malvaceae of Mexico. Syst. Bot. Monogr. 25: 1–522). [Jepson (1936) listed Malvastrum thurberi A. Gray, together with "Malacothamnus fasciculatus Greene" under "Sphaeralcea fasciculata Arthur", by which he evidently meant Malacothamnus fasciculatus (Nutt. ex Torr. & A. Gray) Greene and Sphaeralcea fasciculata (Nutt. ex Torr. & Gray) Arthur, respectively, the latter as cited by Fryxell (1988, p. 271) as a synonym under Malacothamnus fasciculatus (Nutt. ex Torr. & A. Gray) Greene.]
