Initial Editorial Analysis 11 Apr 2005
Source of Report for California | 1990 Phytologia, as cited in Kartesz & Meacham
Initial Editorial Comments | neither this name, nor any of the three synonyms in Gnaphalium listed in Kartesz & Meacham, even mentioned in Munz, The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], so evidently an existing taxon newly reported for CA; possibly one of the Kartesz & Meacham synonyms in Gnaphalium would be used instead; "apparently adventive and uncommon..." in US localities, only one specimen (Tracy 15057, TEX) reported for California by Nesom (Phytologia 68:191. 1990)
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 | 13 Jul 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates that Guy Nesom, The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Author of Gamochaeta and Gnaphalium, treats Gnaphalium purpureum L. var. americanum (Mill.) Klatt as a synonym of Gamochaeta americana (Phytologia 68:186-198.1990), and that the author of the basionym is Philip Miller (Mill., not P. Mill., in Authors of Plant Names). [Author citation corrected to Gamochaeta americana (Mill.) Wedd., from Gamochaeta americana (P. Mill.) Wedd. previously in this index, 6 Aug 2004; Nesom indicated (Phytologia 191:191) a single specimen from California (Humboldt Co., Tracy 15057, TEX), evidently representing an adventive plant, so it seems unlikely that the taxon is naturalized in the state.]
Correspondence 2 | 11 Apr 2005 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that Guy Nesom (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Author), in SIDA 21:734--736 (2004), stated "Plants of the U. S. A. previously identified as Gamochaeta americana . . . are here identified as Gamochaeta coarctata (Willd.) Kerg. . . . Gamochaeta coarctata occurs mostly in the southeastern states and also apparently is naturalized in California"; and that in SIDA 21:1181 (2004) Nesom cites three records, two of them weeds in cultivated land and one 1936 collection from Humboldt Co. described as local and scarce from 1200' on a hillside pasture in a logged area and presumably the basis of his conclusion of apparent naturalization in CA.
