Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Current Jepson Flora Project Synonyms Scirpus quinqueflorus Hartmann; Eleocharis pauciflora (Lightf.) Link; Eleocharis pauciflora var. fernaldii Svenson; Eleocharis quinqueflora subsp. fernaldii (Svenson) Hultén; Scirpus pauciflorus Lightf.
Initial Editorial Analysis 28 May 2004
Notes on Authorship of Name both = Authors of Plant Names
Notes on Publication of Name Mitteilungen der Thuringischen Botanischen. Gesellschaft 1:89. 1949
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], as cited in Kartesz & Meacham
Initial Editorial Comments "H[eleocharis] quinqueflora (F. X. Hartman) Schwarz instead of pauciflora, but I have seen no discussion as to the reason." in Munz Supplement, p. 183; in no way mentioned in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] (despite Kartesz & Meacham citation); Eleocharis pauciflora listed as synonym in Kartesz & Meacham; indicated for most of NA, except se US, in Kartesz & Meacham; evidently only included in Kartesz & Meacham to accommodate Eleocharis quinqueflora var. bernardina, which, as Eleocharis pauciflora var. bernardina, treated as synonym in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 2 Sep 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that the author of this combination (as "Heleocharis" quinqueflora) is Otto Schwarz (O. Schwarz in Authors of Plant Names) in Mitteilungen der Thuringischen Botanischen. Gesellschaft 1:89 (1949). [Author citation corrected to Eleocharis quinqueflora (Hartmann) O. Schwartz, from Eleocharis quinqueflora (Hartmann) Schwartz originally in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] and this Index, 22 Sep 2003.]
Correspondence 2 13 Mar 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that the spelling "O. Schwartz" in the author citation is to be corrected to "O. Schwarz", and that the spelling in Munz Supplement is correct, despite previous version of the statement in Comments. [Spelling of author citation in main entry and in Comments corrected to "O. Schwarz", from "O. Schwartz" previously in this Index, 16 Mar 2004.]
Correspondence 3 16 Mar 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that S. Galen Smith [The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] family editor and Flora North America author of Eleocharis] treats Eleocharis pauciflora (Lightf.) Link and Eleocharis quinqueflora (Hartmann) O. Schwarz as conspecific, with Eleocharis pauciflora (Lightf.) Link as a synonym of Eleocharis quinqueflora (Hartmann) O. Schwarz because the latter is based on Scirpus quinqueflorus Hartmann (Primae Lin. Inst. Bot., ed. 2:85. 1767), which has priority over Scirpus pauciflorus Lightf., the basionym of Eleocharis pauciflorus (Flora Scotica 2:1078. 1777).
