Jepson Flora Project: Jepson Interchange for California Floristics
Danthonia pilosa R. Br.
Initial Editorial Analysis 3 Jun 2011
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 14 Dec 2001 e-mail from Barbara Ertter (including e-mail from Stephen Darbyshire to Mark Blumer) see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that the common and widespread species introduced into northern California and southern OR, previously known as Danthonia pilosa [=Rytidosperma pilosum], is in fact the New Zealand species Rytidosperma clavatum.
Correspondence 2 20 Aug 2003 e-mail from Dan Post see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that, according to Darbyshire and Connor (Flora North America authors), Rytidosperma penicillatum (Labill.) Connor & Edgar. "was introduced and grown experimentally in several states under the name Danthonia pilosa R. Br. [= Rhytidosperma pilosa (R. Br.) Connor & Edgar]. It has become established in northern California and southwestern Oregon, mainly in coastal is considered a troublesome pest." [Rytidosperma clavatum (Zotov) Connor & Edgar evidently is not even mentioned by by Darbyshire and Connor in their Flora North America treatment, casting uncertainty over this situation. Also, as of 2 Dec 2004, there remains one specimen in UC/JEPS, JEPS98041, still filed as Danthonia pilosa.]
Correspondence 3 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Danthonia pilosa R. Br. is a name that in California has been misapplied to pls belonging instead to Rytidosperma penicillatum (Labill.) Connor & Edgar, which is treated as naturalized in CA.
