Jepson Flora Project: Jepson Interchange for California Floristics

Ceanothus ×bakeri Greene ex McMinn

Initial Editorial Analysis 19 Aug 2009
Source of Report for California Abrams, L. 1940-1960. An Illustrated Flora of the Pacific States, 4 Vols. Stanford Univ. Press, Stanford, as cited in Kartesz & Meacham
Initial Editorial Comments in no way mentioned in Abrams & Ferris, Illustrated Flora of the Pacific States (despite Kartesz & Meacham citation), Munz, The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]; Ceanothus gloriosus X Ceanothus prostratus, only in California in Kartesz & Meacham
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 $ 8 Feb 2002, from Margriet Wetherwax see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that, according to Dieter Wilken (currently revising Ceanothus book at SBBG), Ceanothus X bakeri will not be treated at the taxonomic level indicated. [This suggests it will be recognized, but not at this rank (making Ceanothus X bakeri a syn), but it remains unclear by which name and at what rank the taxon will be recognized.]
Correspondence 2 10 Aug 2009 e-mail from Margriet Wetherwax, including forwarded information from Dieter H. Wilken, author of Ceanothus for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Ceanothus X bakeri is to be treated as the "putative and sterile hybrid acc to McMinn, C. prostratus X C. vestitus", and that the correct authorship should be Greene ex McMinn, because neither Greene nor Baker provided a description, whereas McMinn did (in "Ceanothus 1942, p. 276"). [Therefore, author citation corrected to Ceanothus X bakeri Greene ex McMinn, from Ceanothus X bakeri Greene ex C.F. Baker, pro sp. previously in this Index, 19 Aug 2009.]
