Correspondence 1 indicates "In paper copy on Flora North America, I noted 45 places where microthecum should become microtheca." [Reveal & Gandhi (Taxon 63(1):194. 2014) proposed conserving the spelling "microthecum" over "microtheca" because even though Nuttall published the name as "microtheca" [as a noun in apposition, and therefore not required to agree grammatically with the genus name], "no twentieth or twenty-first century western North America flora (except Abrams), covering an area where the plant occurs, has used any spelling but E. microthecum." Despite their statement that "returning to the long-abandoned E. microtheca after some 160 years of more or less continuous use of E. microthecum would only result in nomenclatural confusion," the proposal was rejected. Therefore, spelling of epithet corrected to Eriogonum microtheca Nutt. throughout this Index (except for parts of this entry), from Eriogonum microthecum Nutt. originally in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], and this Index, 10 Apr 2018.]
