| Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates: that Ziziphus jujuba was published by Philip Miller (Mill. in Authors of Plant Names) in The Gardeners Dictionary, ed. 8:Ziziphus no. 1, 1768, but that this name, which would be cited as Ziziphus jujuba Mill., is illegitimate because it was nomenclaturally superfluous when published; that Miller indirectly referred to Rhamnus zizyphus as a synonym which would have served as a basionym; that the combination Ziziphus zizyphus is not a tautonym [and therefore not invalid under the rules of nomenclature] because of the spelling difference, and that this combination (based on Rhamnus zizyphus L.) was published by H. Karsten (H. Karst. in Authors of Plant Names) in Deutsche Flora. Pharmaceutisch-medicinische Botanik. . . 870. 1882; and that a proposal (1753) has been made to conserve Ziziphus jujuba against Ziziphus zizyphus, but that until such time as that proposal is given final approval, the nomenclaturally correct name for Ziziphus jujuba Mill. nom. cons. prop. is Ziziphus zizyphus (L.)
