Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Treatment submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Charles D. Bell see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Viburnum edule (Michx.) Raf. is to be treated as native to CA, based on its discovery in Shasta-Trinity National Forest, CaRH, n of Mt. Shasta.
Correspondence 2 7 Aug 2013 e-mail from Bruce Baldwin, including forwarded e-mail from Julie Kierstead Nelson see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that Bruce Baldwin disputes the identity of the sole record supporting a native status for Viburnum edule (Michx.) Raf. in California (JEPS116579, from McCloud), and believes that it is more closely related to Viburnum opulus L.. [Viburnum opulus L. is native to Europe, northern Africa, and central Asia, and so would be treated as naturalized in CA, were JEPS116579 confirmed by the Jepson Flora Project author to belong to that taxon.]
Correspondence 3 14 Aug 2018 e-mail from Merissa Hanisko, Environmental Scientist, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Northern Region see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that a plant identified as Viburnum edule by David Giblin, Collection Manager, University of Washington Herbarium has been observed in Siskiyou County, CA, "in a riparian area alongside Bear Creek, a perennial stream, adjacent to a road. General habitat is coniferous forest with spring fed creeks and rocky outcrops. The aspect is north/northeast. Associated species include: Abies concolor, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Physocarpus capitatus, Rubus parviflorus, Ceanothus velutinus, Rubus leucodermis, Athyrium filix-femina, Aquilegia formosa, and many grasses and forbs. One large shrub, approximately 5 feet tall, with a sprawling habit, was observed. Elevation of the site is approximately 5,000 feet and the coordinates follow: 41.91933, -122.19854, Datum: WGS 84."
