Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 | 12 Dec 2006 e-mail from Margriet Wetherwax, including e-mails from Steve Boyd, Dave Keil, and Andy Sanders see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates: that there is 1 specimen of Venidium fastuosum (Jacq.) Stapf in the Consortium of California Herbaria Database, from a residential street near Hemet; that all of the other records at RSA and UCR indicate that this species has not naturalized in CA; that the species is not on any weed list, or on either of Hrusa's newly introduced species lists; that the Current Status should be changed to Jepson Flora Project-9, accepted name for plant occurring in California only under cultivation; and that Venidium fastuosum is now treated as Arctotis fastuosa in Flora North America.
Correspondence 2 | 13 Dec 2006 e-mail from Alison M. Mahoney, The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Author of Arctotis see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that Alison Mahoney (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Author of Arctotis) has two specimens from CDA with "abundant in waste ground, n.e. of Central Ave. & 3rd St., San Bernardino . . . also abundant across street, Gate 5, Norden Air Force Base." on the label, and that she may be considering treating the species as a waif in CA. [Given the collection data for the cited specimens, it seems most appropriate to treat this taxon as an urban weed at this time; given that the taxon has been treated as Arctotis fastuosa by the The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Author in Flora North America, a Current Status of JPP-4a seems most appropriate at this time.]
Correspondence 3 | 5 Mar 2007 e-mail from Alison M. Mahoney see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 | Correspondence 3 confirms that, according to Alison Mahoney (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Author of Arctotis), Venidium fastuosum (Jacq.) Stapf is to be treated as a synonym of Arctotis fastuosa Jacq., and the taxon is to be treated as an urban weed that can establish itself "without deliberate human fostering", although there does not appear to be any evidence that it occurs in wildlands.
