Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 [for Valeriana sitchensis subsp. scouleri] 22 Nov 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that, according to Fred Barrie (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Author) [for Valeriana sitchensis subsp. scouleri]: the correct author citation is Valeriana sitchensis Bong. subsp. scouleri Piper, and not Valeriana sitchensis Bong. subsp. scouleri (Rydb.) Piper; that Piper published the name as "Valeriana sitchensis scouleri", and that, although the rank was not indicated in the name itself, the infraspecific taxon is unquestionably subspecies because Piper states in the introduction that he is following the Philadelphia Code, which recognized the rank of subspecies as the first subdivision of a species; that the name is based on a reference to Valeriana scouleri Rydb. (Mem. NY Bot. Gard. 1: 377. 1900.), which is illegitimate in that Rydberg published Valeriana scouleri as a replacement for Valeriana hookeri Shuttleworth (1837; Flora, oder, Botanische Zeitung 20:450), a name he considered a homonym of Valeriana hookeriana Wight & Arn. (1834), which it is not under the current Code (Art. 58; so that Piper's name is to be treated as a new name, not an illegitimate combination); and that Barrie sees no reason not to recognize this taxon as a species, which is to be called Valeriana hookeri Shuttlew., unless Valeriana scouleri Rydb. is conserved. [Therefore, unless there are other subspp. involved, it is probable that Valeriana sitchensis Bong. subsp. sitchensis will be treated as a synonym of Valeriana sitchensis Bong.]
Correspondence 2 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Abigail J. Moore see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Valeriana sitchensis Bong. subsp. sitchensis is to be recognized and treated as native to CA.
